#8 Mangrove forest, New Caledonia
This huge, natural heart shape in the mangrove swamps near the seaside village of Voh in the northwest of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean east of Australia, is quite extraordinary. Now known as the Heart of Voh, it can only be seen from the air, but was popularized by French photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, who used it on the cover of his best-selling photographic book, Earth from Above. From the late 1800s till after 1940, Voh was a mining town where indentured Vietnamese slogged their lives away. Today it is better known for its production of coffee.
