Located not quite 1,000 km (620 miles) from the North Pole, the Norwegian island of Spitzbergen is home to what has been dubbed the “pool of love.” Said to have formed when the glaciers in the chain of islands that make up the Svalbard archipelago receded, it is a hollow in the earth that is now between 27 m to 36 m (90 to 120 ft) deep. They say that it was the huge blocks of ice that were the cause of the ground subsiding, and that a combination of melted snow, ice and rainwater filled the pool.
