Weirdest Islands

Site of the town of Longyearbyen, which is one of the most northerly human settlements in the world, Spitsbergen is the largest of the Svalbard Islands. It also boasts the world’s most northerly airport and most northerly church, and it is where you will find the Svalbard Global Seed Vault where seeds are kept to preserve biodiversity just in case of a global disaster. Another rather weird fact is that anyone traveling outside of the town on the island must, by law, carry a rifle as protection from polar bears – even though it is illegal to hunt these animals.
