A giant tuba-sized contrabass flugelhorn, this weird musical instrument was the brainchild of jazz musician and tubist, Jim Self. His needs were very specific, and highly technical, and so he got brass instrument expert Robb Stewart to make it for him using a small F tuba bell and other items. The resultant sound it produces is mellow and melodic, says the musician. It’s “brighter” than a tuba, “darker” than a contrabass trumpet, and something between a brass trombone-like cimbasso and an F tuba. The fluba is one of a kind.
